Share my shocking experience about “transportation” in the U.S.

I was impressed by americans irresponsible nature.

暴走タクシー Rampage taxi

ニューヨーク、実は地下鉄が24時間運転でめっちゃ便利なんです。

とはいえ、全然来ないし、冬になると寒すぎてとてもじゃないけれど駅でいつ来るかわからない電車を待てません。

In NYC, a subway was 24-hour operation and very useful.

However, they didn’t come regularly.  We couldn’t wait the untrustworthy train at the station in cold winter.

そこで、たまーにですがタクシー、いわゆるイエローキャブに乗り込みます。

So, sometimes we used taxi, so called “Yellow cab”.

ある日深夜にマンハッタンでタクシーを捕まえて帰路に着こうとしてました。深夜3時くらいです。

タクシーに乗り込んで行き先を告げて、発進。友人と会話していたので途中まで気づかなかったのですが、

One day we caught the taxi in Manhattan and headed for my house at around 3 a.m.

We didn’t notice soon,,,

めちゃくちゃスピード出してる！！！

The driver was driving at an unacceptable speed!!!

いや、高速道路並みにぶっ飛ばしてる。一般道でこんな飛ばして大丈夫？！

He drove like on the highway.  It was totally dangerous.

ただ、驚いたのは、そんなことではなく

Yet the surprising thing was not like this.

めちゃくちゃに信号無視していること。

He was completely ignoring the signal.

マンハッタンって、街がこんな感じで、直線の通りで構成されているんです。

Manhattan is constructed like this way, every street was straight.

ちょうど、南から北上するルートで一直線だったんです。

Our route was straight from south to north.

ただ、直行する通りも数多くあり

信号がとにかく多いです。ワンブロックに1個あります。

There were many crossing streets and at least one traffic light per block.

ドライバー、信号全部赤なのに、ガン無視してぶっとばす。

The driver completely ignored signals even they showed red.

何にも言わずに。笑

まだなんか「この時間は車少ないからねー」とかコミュニケーションとってくれたら人間味あるけど、

ただひたすらに黙々と信号無視。

Without saying anything.  Lol

It would be more humane if he still communicated something like, “There aren’t many cars here at this time of the day.

But he just ignored the traffic light quietly.

え、見えてる？

Can you see those?

なんでそんな急ぐねん。

止まりたくないならもうやめなよ、タクシー運転手。笑

Why were you hurrying?

It was better to quit the job if you don’t want to stop.

ほんとに一直線なので、信じられないスピードで目的地に到着しました。

The route was straightforward, so that we arrived my house in illegal time.

何事もなかったかのように、会計してグッバイ。

やっぱ違うわNY。法律とか、そういうことじゃないんだね、なんかこう、生きるか、死ぬか、やるかやられるか、なのかな。

交差点でもう1人そういう奴に出くわすと、完全に大事故ですけどね。

I paid the bill and said good bye, as if nothing had happened.

It’s not about the law or anything like that.　It’s about live or die.

If you run into another one like that at an intersection, it’s a complete disaster.

あ、もちろんドライバー、シートベルトは当然のようにしてませんよ。

もう感覚おかしくなります、ルールを守る日本人がおかしいのか？？

Oh, of course drivers didn’t wear seat belts so naturally.

It makes me feel crazy already. Are Japanese who follow the rules crazy?

当たっても、イイよねっ Don’t mind bumping

ああ、事故で思い出しました。

ある日車で移動中、渋滞で進んだり止まったりを繰り返していました。自分の車と前の車の間が少し空いた時に、横から車が横断していきました。

When I was in the car, I saw an incident right in front of me.

When there was a small space between my car and the car in front of me in traffic, a car crossed from the side.

その時、、、ドンっ。

then,,, bump!

あ、事故った。

That was a traffic accident.

横から横断しようとした車が前の車のバンパーにぶつかりました。

A car crossed from the side hit the car in front of me.

うわっ、しっかりぶつかったなあ、と思っていたら

ぶつかった車一瞬止まりましたが、数秒後何事もなかったかのように進み出しました。

I saw and heard the crashing, however, the car just ran again as if nothing happened.

えぇ？！

What?

当て逃げ！？

Was that hit-and-run?!

ただ、当てられた側も何事もなかったかのように、一切動じません。

However, the car on the side that was hit does not react at all, as if nothing had happened.

周りも普通に運転継続していました。なんか自分だけあたふたしていて、ん？さっきの事故は気のせいか？とも思うくらい。

ただ実際に当たっていたんです！

やばすぎるだろおおおおお、適当すぎるだろううううう。事故の処理する時間ももったいないくらい急いでいたのでしょうか？？？

Everyone except me was continuing to drive normally. I felt like I was the only one upset.  Was it my imagination?

The cars hit, actually!

Were they in such a hurry that they didn’t even have time to deal with the accident?

後々知るのですが、なんか、アメリカの車には大体バンパーにさらに防御カバーみたいなものをつけてます。

これ、縦列駐車の時に有効なんです。アメリカは基本的に縦列駐車します。住宅地とかだと道路の１車線は駐車で埋まっています。

I later learned that most American cars have some kind of additional protective cover on the bumper.

This is effective when parallel parking. In the U.S., cars are basically parallel parked. In residential areas, one lane of the road is filled with parked cars.

この縦列駐車の幅が異様に狭くて、やたら縦列駐車上手いなあと思っていたんです。

しかし、これふつーに車を前後の車にぶつけながら入ってました。笑

I had respected American’s parking techniques, however, they just  crushing their cars into cars around theirs to park parallel. Haha

車で体当たりして無理やりスペースを作って駐車してたんです。さすがアメリカ。これは当たり前っぽくて、ぶつかる前提なんですね、、、、

They made space to park. That’s America. This seemed to be the norm, as if they were going to bump into each other.

少しでも傷をつけると大事になる日本とは大違いですね。。アメリカでは車は本当にただの移動手段なのでしょう。。

This is very different from Japan, where even the slightest scratch can cause serious problems. In the U.S., cars are really just a means of transportation.

デジタルなテキトウ Unreliable signals

適当なのは、まだまだあります。

地下鉄の行き先表示はよゆーで間違ってます。

もうね、初めての場所だと、間違っててもわからん！行き先表示が信用でいないとすると、空気感、雰囲気を感じてノリで乗らないといけないんです

もうこのくらいは驚きません。

There were bunch of unreliable things.

The destination shown in train was mostly incorrect.

Even though that was first time to ride a train, we had to feel the atmosphere and find the destination of train, not from the sign.

This doesn’t surprise me anymore.

うんーー、君はしっかりしようね？

GOなの？STOPなの？？もうどっちも100％で光ってる。

Come on!  You are the only one who has to be sure.

Both sign were lighting as 100%.

横断歩道も適当なら、何を信じれば良いのかしら。。

そう、自分の感覚です。

If the pedestrian signal is appropriate, what am I supposed to believe?

Yes, my own senses.

ひたすら周り見ながら渡りましたよ。

I crossed the street while looking around me.

自己責任大国、アメリカ。

America, the country of self-responsibility.
