Calling all smoking couples out there!
とにかく喫煙カップルにおすすめな国、セルビアです
Serbia is definitely a country I’d recommend to smoking couples.
昨今世界的に喫煙率が下がっている中で、セルビアは39%で世界第3位の喫煙大国です。
While smoking rates are falling worldwide, Serbia still stands at 39% — the third highest in the world.
道端はどこでも、綺麗めレストランでも、何処でもタバコが吸えます。日本じゃ今じゃ珍しいねー！
You can smoke pretty much anywhere — on the street, even in nice restaurants. That’s pretty rare in Japan these days!
すれ違う人はほとんどタバコ手に持ってる、女性もほとんど、男性は体感、喫煙率100%
Almost everyone you pass seems to have a cigarette in their hand. Women too. And the men? Honestly, it felt like a 100% smoking rate.

安くてうまい. Cheap ‘n’ Delicious
とはいえ食事は副流煙と楽しむのがセルビア流なので、非喫煙者にはキツイでしょう！
In Serbia, meals often come with a side of secondhand smoke, so non-smokers might have a hard time!

これは特にオールドスタイル、かなりデカいパンの中にケバブが入ってる
This one was especially old-school — a huge piece of bread stuffed with kebab.
フードトラックとか、ストリートフードがたくさんありました
There were plenty of food trucks and street food stalls around.
夜もバーとかレストランとか、安くてうまい
Bars and restaurants stay lively at night too — cheap and delicious.
こちら、ミシュランレストランも気軽に入りました。 Casually dropped into a Michelin restaurant.
料理の説明がすごい。1品につき1分くらい。こだわりを丁寧に教えてくれる
The explanation for each dish was incredible — about a minute per plate.
白いクリーム状のものが「セルビア名物」カイマク（kajmak）。バターとチーズの中間みたいな乳製品
The white creamy stuff is kajmak, a Serbian specialty — kind of halfway between butter and cheese.
このミシュランレストランも安くて、一通り食べて8000円いかないくらい
さすがに、ここは禁煙でした。
Even this Michelin restaurant was pretty cheap. We tried a bit of everything and still spent less than ¥8,000.
And yes, finally — this place was non-smoking.

サブカルチャー Subculture
実はセルビアは結構サブカルが根強い国 Serbia actually has a pretty strong subculture scene.
社会主義国ではあったけどソ連圏とは距離を置いていて、ユーゴ時代は西側文化が入りやすく、ロックやパンクが発展。
90年代は、戦争や制裁、政治的混乱の中で、音楽やアートが反体制の表現になって、いまでも「反骨精神」の空気がストリートアートに残っている！
It was a socialist country, but it kept some distance from the Soviet Union. During the Yugoslav era, Western culture came in more easily, and rock and punk became popular.
In the 1990s, during wars, sanctions, and political problems, music and art became a way to speak against the government.
You can still feel that rebellious spirit in Serbia’s street art today!

The entrance fee was by donation.
I got way too excited and gave them a big 500 RSD bill. Then I realized it was only about ¥800…
セルビアのサッカーが見れなかった代わりこっちこれた最高や（チケット取ってたけどサポーターの暴動で無観客試合となった。。。）
I couldn’t watch the Serbian football match, but at least I got to come here instead. Best trade ever.(The match was played with no fans because of trouble with the supporters…)

Beer bottles rolling around on a floor that probably hasn’t been cleaned in years.

Broken walls. A sofa that smelled like some old grandpa’s house.
Bare light bulbs… and not even all of them worked.

A chair destroyed by people putting their feet on it too many times — now officially a footrest.

The content was a documentary movie with no dialogue, questioning modern industrial society.

ちょっとずつの街灯しかないから、夜は暗いね。秋では18時にはかなり暗い。
Only a few streetlights makes there pretty dark at night. In autumn, it is already quite dark by 6 p.m.
けど、道ではそこかしこで音楽の生演奏があったり、ポップコーンの屋台とかもあったり
若い子、子供も23時すぎてもいる！
But there is live music here and there on the streets, and even popcorn stands.
Young people — even kids — are still outside after 11 p.m.!
暗いけど賑わっていて、とても安全に出歩けますー
It is dark, but still lively, and it feels very safe to walk around.

なんとベオグラード、2025年1月からすべての市内公共交通（バス、トラム、トロリーバス、都市鉄道）を完全無料化しました！
これはヨーロッパで最大規模の無料交通制度らしい
Since January 2025, all public transport in Belgrade — buses, trams, trolleybuses, and city trains — has been completely free!
The largest public free transportation system in Europe.
無料化の背景は、
2024年末の市長選挙を控えた政府与党の市民への「生活支援施策」です
ベオグラードでは平均月収が約800ユーロ程度と西欧諸国より低いので、通勤・通学者や高齢者の経済的負担を軽減する狙いとのこと
The background was a policy to help people with daily living costs before the local election at the end of 2024.
The average monthly income in Belgrade is lower than in Western Europe, so the idea was to reduce transport costs.
いつまでこの政策が続くのか、気になりますねえ！
I wonder how long this policy will last!
他の国でも、街の活性化を狙って施策はやっているみたい。Other cities have also tried similar ideas to bring more people into the city.
🇪🇪 タリン（エストニア）-「市民登録をしている住民」限定で、2013年から。Tallinn, Estonia — free since 2013, but only for registered residents.
🇫🇷 ダンケルク（フランス）- 2018年から経済衰退した地方都市再生のため Dunkirk, France — free since 2018, as part of an effort to bring life back to the city.
運営赤字や車両混雑といった課題はありつつも、公共交通利用者が増加し、渋滞は軽減、街も活性化してます。
面白い取り組みなので続けて欲しいですね
There are some problems, such as higher costs and crowded vehicles, but public transport use has increased, traffic has gone down, and the cities have become more active.
It is such an interesting idea. I hope they keep it going!
ベオグラードも結果的に、市内中心部の商業地区や再開発エリアへの人流が増え盛り上がる！
In Belgrade too, more people are coming into the city center, making the city even more lively.
一方、車両の老朽化や赤字拡大が懸念されています

On the other hand, there are worries about old vehicles and growing costs.

可愛いけどね！ Cute though!!
あと、やはり混雑がすごい。the bad thing is it gets crowded.
無料だからだれも彼も乗り込みます。平日の昼間でもめっちゃ混む！！！
Since it’s free, everyone just gets on. Even in the middle of a weekday, it can be packed!!!
ただ、いいなあーと思ったのは、そんな中でも
当然のように譲り合う精神。
日本のように絶対に座らねば！という逼迫感がない。
But one thing I really liked was
how people naturally give up their seats.
There’s none of that “I HAVE to get a seat!” feeling you sometimes get in Japan.
当然のようにお年寄りや子どもたちに譲り合うし、とても優しいいいー

注意すべきは、、、
時刻表より早く行くことが多い。
海外イライラあるあるですが。ま、無料だからなんか許せる
One thing to watch out for…
Buses often come earlier than the timetable.
A classic travel frustration. But hey, it’s free, so somehow I can forgive it.
ちなみに、セルビアの公共交通機関に対しては、Googleマップがかなり機能します
遅延とか、予定より早いとか、ほぼ反映されているので、ぜひ参考になされぇ
By the way, Google Maps works really well for public transport in Serbia.
Delays, buses coming earlier than planned — it shows most of them pretty well. Definitely use it!
更に注意ポイントは、
時間によって通る路線変わる！
そもそも無料のくせに、ほぼ24時間動いているので、素晴らしいのですが、、！
And one more thing,
The route can change depending on the time!
Again,, to be fair, it is free and runs almost 24/7, which is amazing…!
この空港行きバスに乗れないと、飛行機に間に合わないのでドキドキして調べる。。
But if I miss this bus to the airport, I’m missing my flight. Checking very carefully.

すんごい運転手が飛ばす。
人が乗らなそうなバス停ぶっ飛ばしすぎて
30分も早くバス停を通過していく。。
まだ乗りたいお客さんもバス停に来てないと思うのよね笑
Once we got on, the driver went crazy fast.
He skipped bus stops where nobody seemed to be waiting, and somehow we were passing stops 30 minutes early…
I’m pretty sure the customer hadn’t even arrived at the bus stop yet lol.
