Getting Treated in Europe

There was no by-the-book person in Europe.

Everyone embodies “Iki”.

Treated by Hotel in Serbia

At a hotel in Belgrade, Serbia.

https://belgradeinn.com/

I paid for my hotel stay in cash.

I could pay by card or cash, but I had a ton of cash on me,

so I said, “Cash it is.”

but I only had big bills, so they would have had to give me a bunch of change.

Then the hotel staff was like, “Nah, it’s fine.”

Wait. Really???

At a tiny family shop, OK, maybe I could understand.

But this is a HOTEL.

Aren’t hotel bills supposed to be, you know… exact?

Even at an izakaya in Japan, if the money is off by just 10 yen, everyone starts checking what went wrong.

But here, at a hotel, “A few hundred yen? Whatever.”

I was shocked. And more importantly..

You are clearly NOT the owner. Are you really allowed to decide that?? LOL

In Japan, a random staff member usually can’t just go, “Eh, it’s only a few hundred yen. Who cares!”

I was shocked by how much freedom they had to decide things on the spot. (Or maybe just super relaxed about money?)

Got Free Ramen in Sweden

At a ramen shop in the small Swedish city of Linköping. There are almost no Japanese people there, but somehow there are sushi and ramen shops everywhere.

None of them are good, though!

Then my friends told me about a new ramen shop. It had just opened, but somehow the whole town already knew it.

Small town. News travels FAST.

Boru ramen house https://www.boruramenhouse.se/

My friend said, “But for Saito, the ramen freak, it’s probably like three stars out of five.” So of course, I went.

I tried it, and yeah, it was pretty good. Definitely the best ramen in town.

Tonkotsu

But the noodles were super sticky. Almost gooey.

It felt like the starch on the noodles didn’t wash off properly while they were boiling.

And it was SO salty!

For some reason, they make ramen crazy salty there. People are like, “Real Japanese ramen is this salty, right?”

But it was just salt without much umami. Tough.

But the locals looked VERY happy, going, “So good! So good!!”

In Sweden, ramen shops are almost like bars. People sit there for two hours with one bowl, slowly eating it. By then, those noodles are DEAD.

Maybe it’s basically a different dish.

While eating, I started talking with the owners.

They’ve been to Japan for ramen travel, and love “Mutekiya”.  Yeah not bad, but I can imagine your quality.

They are going to buy their own noodle maker.  Then they said, “Give us some advice!!”

They really wanted to get better. Super serious about their ramen.

So I gave them some advice. (have eaten more than 2,500 bowls of ramen, after all. Ramen freak here.)

They were super happy and went, “Here, have this!”

Free extra noodles AND a ramen egg!!

I love people who work with their heart like this!

But the noodles were so sticky and heavy. They sucked up all the soup and turned into something different.

Somehow I finished it all. My heart and my stomach were both VERY full.

That was.

Got Free Burger in Sweden

I went to a chain burger shop. First of all, a burger, fries, and Coke set was 3,500 yen!! Sweden is WAY too expensive! Japan suddenly feels poor!!

So after getting over that first shock…

There was a self-order machine, but one of the staff came over and talked to me.

“We have this special deal right now.”

You get a nice deal if you become a member. Of course I’m doing it. I’m poor, remember.

So I downloaded the app, filled everything in, and tried to sign up…

But maybe because my phone was bought in Japan, I couldn’t get the approval message.

Tried again and again. Nothing.

The staff member was like, “Oh… huh. Why isn’t it working?”

I tried, but if I can’t sign up, I can’t sign up.

I was like, “It’s fine, I’ll just pay the normal price.”

Then the same staff member came back.

“You can sign up later. Today, let’s just say you already did. I’ll give you the deal.”

と! WHAT!

this was a real discount, worth around 1,000 yen.

Not some tiny thing.

She just gave me the discount and checked me out.

So nice!!

But she was just a young part-time worker.

You’re not the manager or owner. WHY DO YOU HAVE THIS MUCH POWER?? (Thanks)

At a little family shop in the countryside, sure, someone might say, “give you this one for free!”

But at a big chain in a city? A young part-time worker just giving away a 1,000-yen discount? That would never happen in Japan.

I even started worrying for HER. Like, how are you going to explain this in the system? LOL

There’s this strange freedom to make decisions on the spot—in a good way.

And really, instead of saying, “Sorry, you couldn’t sign up, so no deal,” if someone says, “It’s fine, I got you today,”

We think, “I’m coming back here!” And that means more sales in the end!

I really like a world like that.

That’s what I call cool.

Got Free Fried Dough in Hungary

When I was in Budapest, Hungary.

There was this food festival kind of place, with lots of food stands where you could eat and drink standing up.

Karavan https://karavanbudapest.hu/

You pick a stand, get in line, and order.

I decided to try Lángos, a famous Hungarian food.

It’s famous Hungarian street food: fried dough with different toppings.

The stand was pretty popular, so I waited around 5–10 minutes.

Finally, my turn.

I ordered, and when it was time to pay, my card didn’t work.

Huh?

Again.

Nope.

I tried two or three other cards. None of them worked.

Probably one of those security blocks you sometimes get when using a card overseas.

There was a line behind me. And the food was already made.

Then the guy said, “Ah, it’s fine!”

“It’s already made. Just take it. It’s on me.”

Wait, seriously??

One piece was around 2,500 yen. (EXPENSIVE!! That is NOT a street-food price! Please take a moment to be shocked by that first.)

No, no, no. Sorry for the trouble!! But also… that decision was FAST!!

Before I knew it, I had been given free food at lightning speed.

But I couldn’t just leave it like that, so after eating, I pushed some cash on him as a tip.

(Well, I only had around 1,500 yen in cash, so I still didn’t even cover the full price.)

THIS is what I mean. The freedom to make a decision right there.

It was a busy stand with a long line, so maybe it makes more money to just move on than waste time on one customer and lose other sales.

I like this. People making their own call instead of acting like a human rulebook.

Got Free Ramen in Denmark

A ramen shop in, Copenhagen, Denmark.

I had actually noticed this place on the first day of my trip.

I walked past it, and there was a HUGE line.

And it wasn’t just tourists. Lots of locals were waiting too.

Ramen shops overseas don’t move people through as fast as they do in Japan. Everyone eats slowly, so the line barely moves.

People were standing outside in the rain for 40 minutes or even longer.

You wait THAT long???

Now I HAD to know.

So on day two, I went.

SLURP RAMEN https://slurpramen.dk/

Love the interior and character.

It was a very clean, elegant style of shoyu and shio ramen.

took a bite, SO GOOD!!!

Hold on, Wouldn’t this be a pretty good even in Tokyo?

There were mushroom flavors, seafood stock, meat stock… You could tell they had really worked on every part of it.

I was impressed. Actually, SHOCKED.

Told the chef,

“This is way too good. I’ve eaten ramen all over Europe, and this is easily the best.”

He was super happy,

“Really?! If a Japanese guy says that, then I know we’re doing something right!”

Then naturally, “Extra noodles, please!”

Extra noodles are NOT 100 yen like in Japan.

In Denmark, they’re around 700 yen. (SERIOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!!)

Since you pay first, I went to pay for the extra noodles,

but the chef said, “Nah, it’s fine.”

“You made me really happy too. Let me give you this one.”

Seriously??? THIS is what I love! Pure human kindness!!

Got free extra noodles.

It just feels GOOD.

He feels good and I feel good.

But after getting treated this well,

my Japanese soul, my sense of “I have to return the favor” stands up.

No way.. I’m just TAKING here.

I want to GIVE something back!!

The shop happened to sell stickers, pins, T-shirts…

And they were actually pretty cute.

I already loved the ramen, and now they had won me over with the service too. Of course I wanted to buy stuff!!!

“This one. And this one.” I started grabbing everything.

And after buying this and that, the final bill was,

around 15,000 yen.

went to a ramen shop, got free extra noodles, the ramen was too good, then I wanted to return the favor,

結果15,000円でした and somehow spent 15,000 yen.

Worth it.
