ベナン人、大半がこんな感じの上下セットアップの民族衣装を着てます

In Benin, most people wear traditional outfits that are usually matching top-and-bottom sets like this.

柄が派手でカラフルで、オシャレやなあ！！、、、欲しい！

So colorful and stylish—Now I want one!

この伝統衣装、ボンバ（Bomba）といって、一枚布で作られています。

とってもカラフルで、幾何学模様などを中心に様々な柄が目立ちます。

何より、黒人の肌にこのカラフルな布がめっちゃ映える！

These outfits are called “Bomba” and made from a single piece of fabric and often feature bold, colorful geometric patterns. They really pop, especially against darker skin tones—it’s beautiful to see!

街中では老若男女このボンバを着ていて、なんか文化があってすごく良いですねえ。

日本だと、みんなまだ着物で生活してる感じ。

You’ll see people of all ages wearing Bombas around town. It gives such a strong cultural vibe—kind of like if everyone in Japan still wore kimonos every day.

ただ、このボンバなかなかよそ者の観光客が手に入れるのは難しい。。。

But… getting your hands on a Bomba as a foreign tourist isn’t so easy.

難関1：時間かかる        

Challenge 1: It Takes Time

ただこのボンバ、実は服としては売っていないんです。なんと全てテーラーメイド！

生地を選ぶ＠生地屋　→    採寸、裁断、縫製、装飾＠仕立て屋

ということで、通常は最低5日はかかるらしい。

そのため、長期で滞在しない旅行者にとってはボンバの作製はハードルが高い。

Bombas aren’t sold as ready-made clothes—they’re all tailor-made!
Here’s how it works:

1. Choose your fabric at a fabric shop

2. Get measured, have the fabric cut, sewn, and decorated at a tailor’s shop

This whole process usually takes at least 5 days, which can be tough if you’re just visiting short-term.

難関2：店の情報がない      

Challenge 2: No Store Info Online

生地屋や仕立て屋がほぼ全て現地人用のため、ネット上ひいてはMapにも情報がなく、一見さんは店の場所を探すことすら不可能でしょう。現地人に直接聞き込みが必要。

Most fabric shops and tailors are for locals, so you won’t find them on the internet—or even on Google Maps. Finding a place as a first-timer is nearly impossible without asking locals for directions.

難関3：言語        

Challenge 3: Language Barrier

仕立て屋さん、完全に現地人相手の商売ですので、彼らは英語が話せません。英語が話せるベナン人を仲間にするか、フランス語をマスターしてください。

Tailors cater to local customers and typically don’t speak English. You’ll either need to bring along a Beninese friend who speaks English, or brush up on your French—that’s the main language here.

そんなこんなで、観光客でボンバをオーダーメイドした人はほぼいないらしい。

だが、諸事情でベナンに閉じ込められて少し時間ができたことと、英語の話せるデキる宿のオーナー(左)がテーラー(右)の知り合いだったことで、

So, because of all that, it turns out that almost no tourists actually go through the challenging of getting a Bomba custom-made.

But for us!
Due to some unexpected circumstances, I ended up being “stuck” in Benin for a bit longer than planned. On top of that, the super capable owner of my guesthouse (on the left), who speaks English, just happened to know a local tailor (on the right)!

「こりゃ絶対作りたい！！」とボンバをオーダーしてみました。

“I have to get one made!”—so I decided to order my very own Bomba.

採寸　Measurements

さすがテーラーメイド、結構細かく採寸してくれて、希望も聞いてくれます。

腕周りの太さ、裾の長さ、着丈の長さ、などなど

As a tailor-made outfit, they took pretty detailed measurements and even asked about my preferences things like sleeve width, pant length, shirt length, and more.

弟子、と言っても中学生くらい、が熱心に寸法をノートに書き書きしてくれてます。かわいい

The apprentice—who’s probably around middle school age—was diligently writing down all the measurements in a notebook. So focused, and honestly, really cute!

生地選び　Fabric selection

ベナン最大都市、コトヌーで生地を買うなら「Missebo」という地区がおすすめらしい！

If you’re looking to buy fabric in Benin’s largest city, Cotonou, the go-to area is said to be “Missebo”! It’s known for having the best selection.

生地屋に限らず商店が立ち並んでいて、日本で言うとアメ横みたいな感じでしょうか。

人口密度はアメ横の1/100くらいだけど。

The area isn’t just fabric stores—it’s packed with all kinds of shops.

I’d say it’s kind of like Ameyoko in Tokyo.   Well, it’s probably about 1/100th the population density though.

さて、生地屋に来ました。MisseboのAbomey通りです。

We arrived at a fabric shop on Abomey Street in Missebo.

この店もホームページもなければ、地図にも表示されない。現地人の案内なしには辿り着けませんでした。

This shop has no website, and it doesn’t even show up on maps.     There’s no way I would’ve found it without a local guiding me.

いやあーにしてもたくさん種類がある！生地自体の品質が、最高級品から標準品まで、色や柄（特に幾何学模様が多い）もこりゃ人と被んないなってくらい様々あって選びがいがあるね。

質感も、糊が効いた通気性0のパリッとしたものから、柔らかめのものまである。

And wow, so many options!
They’ve got everything from high-end fabrics to standard ones, and the colors and patterns (especially geometric designs) are super varied.
You can really choose something unique, chances are you won’t see anyone else wearing the same thing.

The textures also vary from stiff, zero-breathability types that are heavy with starch, to softer.

店長曰く、生地はインド製、インドネシア製のものが多いとのこと！

そもそも、植民地時代にこの派手な柄のインド布をヨーロッパ人が持ち込んだことが、現在のボンバの起源と考えられているらしい。

According to the shop owner, most of the fabric comes from India and Indonesia!

Apparently, the origins of the Bomba can be traced back to the colonial era, when Europeans brought these vibrant, patterned Indian textiles to West Africa. That’s what eventually evolved into the traditional styles we see today.

店長「それぞれこの模様にも意味があってなあ」

私「へー、この黄色の模様の意味は？」

店長「んーーー何だろこれ、知らん」

知らんのかい！まあ、自分で作ってないもんねえ

Shop Owner: “Each pattern actually has its own meaning.”
Me: “Oh really? What does this yellow one mean?”
Shop Owner: “Uhh… I don’t know.”
Me: “You don’t know?! Come on!”

Well, fair enough he’s not the one making them!

生地のお値段、、相場はおおよそ5,000CFA（1200円）。最高級生地でも10,000CFAです（宿のオーナー情報）。

The going rate for fabric is about 5,000 CFA, even for good quality.
The top-tier stuff might cost around 10,000 CFA, according to my guesthouse owner.

ただ彼ら、初めは25,000CFA（6000円）を要求してくる。しっかりふっかけてきます。

5分の1まで交渉頑張ってください、基本的に値札がついてないものはいつ何時も交渉必須！

BUT, don’t be surprised if they initially quote you something like 25,000 CFA.
Yeah, they’ll absolutely try to mark it up if you look like a tourist.

Aim to negotiate down to around one-fifth of the original price.
Since most things don’t have price tags here, haggling is always part of the game!

仕立て　Tailoring

結局、エクスプレスで当日中にやってもらいました。テーラーの仕事が立て込んでないと、こう言うことができます。

宿のオーナーがねじ込んでくれました。

朝採寸→そのまま生地選び→仕立て屋にパス→同日夕方完成！

In the end, I managed to get it done express within the same day!

This kind of thing is only possible if the tailor isn’t super busy…
Thankfully, my guesthouse owner made it happen.

仕立て料 8,000CFA（2000円）

いやあ、エクスプレスだけど依然安いよね。

Tailoring Cost: 8,000 CFA

Even with express service, it’s still super affordable, right?

この値段からさらに、もし必要ならボタンの装飾分とかをプラスする感じ。

If you want any extras, like decorative buttons etc., those are added on separately.

ボンバ、カッコ良すぎる。

The Bomba is SO COOL.

通気性が悪く、めちゃ汗かきます。現地のベナン人誰1人として汗かいてないけどどう言うことなん？！結構ピチッと着てるけどもさ。

「俺たちは、君らみたいに水飲まないからな笑」とのこと笑

The only downside? It’s not very breathable, so I was sweating like crazy.
I noticed that not a single local seemed to break a sweat though,,, what’s going on there?!

One local told me, “We don’t drink water like you guys do!” lol
