Estonia was simply adorable.

出ました建物の「正面だけを豪華に飾る」建築様式、ファサード。かわいい。
The architecture, those buildings decorated only on the front, called “facades.” They’re irresistibly charming.
タリンの名前の語源は「Taani-linn」＝“デンマーク人の城”。
デンマークの支配下（13世紀）で築かれたバルト海の城塞都市なのですね
The name “Tallinn” comes from “Taani-linn,” meaning “Danish castle.” It was built in the 13th century under Danish rule as a fortress city along the Baltic Sea.

この壁は13世紀、デンマーク統治時代に侵略から守るために築かれたもの。
その後、ハンザ同盟の重要都市として発展し、交易の中心となったタリンは、
ロシア・スウェーデン・デンマークなど周囲の国から常に狙われ侵略される存在でした。
The entire city is surrounded by massive walls, built in the 13th century during Danish rule to defend against invaders.
Later, Tallinn grew as an important city in the Hanseatic League, becoming a hub of trade — and a constant target of powers like Russia, Sweden, and Denmark.

And amazingly, you can still walk on those walls today.
当時のヨーロッパでは、リガ（ラトビア）やヴィスビー（スウェーデン）なども同様に城壁都市として建設されましたが、
ここタリンは、全長2.3kmの壁と20以上の塔が現存しており、保存状態が圧倒的に良い。
Cities like Riga in Latvia and Visby in Sweden were built with similar fortifications in medieval Europe.
What makes Tallinn truly special is that 2.3 kilometers of its walls and more than 20 towers are still standing today.

30年戦争（17世紀）やナポレオン戦争（19世紀）、第二次世界大戦などでヨーロッパでは多くの都市が焼失しましたが、タリンは直接的な戦場にはならなかったのです
また、タリンは早い段階（13〜14世紀）から石と煉瓦による建築が主流だったため、火災の被害が限定的でした。その結果、城壁・教会などが何百年も現存している！
While many European cities were destroyed by wars or fires, Tallinn was never a direct battlefield.
Since stone and brick construction became common here as early as the 13th–14th century, fire damage was minimal.
As a result, the city’s walls, churches, and towers have stood for centuries — still alive today.

The narrow streets are adorable, lined with soft pastel-colored buildings that soothe the eyes.

Today, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, even the colors of the walls are protected by city law.
And since Estonia endures long, gray winters, people began painting their homes bright to bring a little light into their days.
