誰かを呪いたい時、、ありますよね。

こーんな呪いの人形（ブードゥードール）、呪術、黒魔術といえば、、、「ブードゥー教」です。

There are times when you just want to curse someone, right?

When we think about curses, magic spells, and black magic, we can’t forget about… “Voodoo!”

現代の西アフリカ諸国では、植民地時代のイギリスやフランスといった宗主国の影響でキリスト教とイスラム教が大半を占めていますが、

伝統的な宗教的慣習や儀式もいまだに根強く存在しており、西アフリカでは「ブードゥー教」がよく知られています。特にベナンではヴードゥー教が国教として認められていて、まさに国のアイデンティティを表しています。

In West African countries, Christianity and Islam are the main religions, largely due to the influence of former colonial powers like Britain and France.

However, traditional religious practices and rituals are still there, and “Voodoo” is widely known in West Africa. In fact, in Benin, Voodoo is even recognized as the national religion, symbolizing the country’s identity.

ちなみにブードゥー教、世界に信者5000万人もいるらしいよ！！

By the way, did you know Voodoo has about 50 million followers worldwide?!

今回は、ブードゥー教の発祥地、ベナンのヴィダに向かい、呪術を習得しに行きました。

So, this time I headed to Ouidah in Benin, the birthplace of Voodoo, to learn the secrets of magic!

ヴィダへ向かう Head to Ouidah

さて、タクシーを呼んで、ワンデイツアーを交渉してみる。

As first, called taxi and tried to make one-day tour plan.

といってもベナン人は英語が話せません。公用語のフランス語が話せるホテルオーナーがワンデイツアーを提案してさらには価格交渉してくれました。

So, the thing is, people in Benin don’t speak much English (official language is French). But luckily, the hotel owner, who speaks French and English, offered a one-day tour and even helped negotiate the price!

30000CFAから25000CFA（6000円）に値下げ交渉してくれました。

コトヌーからヴィダまでの往復と一日中のプライベートツアー、安いです。

交渉中もちゃんと大事なところは英語で通訳してくれたオーナー、ウインクして去っていく。。カッケェ

He brought it down from 30,000 CFA to 25,000 CFA (about 6,000 yen).

The round trip from Cotonou to Ouidah plus a whole day of private touring for such a great price!

And during the negotiation, the owner made sure to translate the important stuff in English, then gave a wink and walked away… So cool!

ベナンって熱帯気候らしく、雨季乾季はありつつも基本的に高温多湿です。コトヌーからヴィダへの道のりでは緑の景色、熱帯の景色が広がってます。

Benin has a tropical climate, so it’s mostly hot and humid. On the way from Cotonou to Ouidah, we could see beautiful green countryside and tropical scenery.

ゾベ市場 Zobe market

来ましたゾベ市場。ブードゥー教の儀式に使う呪物など売られているので有名らしい。

なんて怖え名前の市場、、

This is a famous market for selling Voodoo ritual items. Such a scary name….

でまさかの靴を買いました。

バイクタクシーの振動が強すぎてノリが剥がれてしまったので。。

But I bought sandals. My shoes were destroyed by strong vibration of bike taxi.

交渉の跡 A memory of negotiation

いい感じの黒サンダルをゲッツ。2,300 CFA（600円）で落ち着いたもよう。

若い子もしっかり交渉してくるね。

Got some nice black sandals for 2,300 CFA (about 600 yen)! Feels like a great deal.

Even the young boy was really good at negotiating here! They know how to work a bargain.

ブードゥー教 Traditional religion, Voodoo

伝統宗教、ブードゥー教とは何なのか？ So, what is Voodoo?

人形に釘刺しまくったりとか、呪術とか、のダークなイメージが知られていますが、少し誤解があるようです。

Voodoo often gets a dark reputation, with images of dolls nailed with pins, or curses. But that’s actually a bit of a misunderstanding.

奴隷としてアメリカやヨーロッパに連れて行かれた人々によって、西洋にも持ち込まれたブードゥー教ですが、奴隷制度や人種差別と結びつけられ、当初から負のイメージがついていたよう。特に、映画や小説、メディアでは、ブードゥー教の生贄の儀式や呪いの人形（ブードゥー・ドール）が象徴的にそしてダークに扱われたらしいです。

確かに結構グロかったですけどねえ。。。

Voodoo was brought to the West by enslaved people from Africa to America and Europe. It became linked to slavery and racism, and it carried a negative image. Especially in movies, books, and media, rituals involving sacrifices and the Voodoo dolls became symbols of black magic.

Sure, some of it was pretty intense, though…

ただ実際は、ブードゥー　＝　精霊　という意味で、自然の力や精霊、神々とつながり、癒しや守護を求める宗教らしく、アフリカの多くの民族を伝統的に支えてきた宗教的考え方なのです。

But in reality, Voodoo means “spirits”, and it’s a religion that connects with natural forces, spirits, and gods, seeking healing and protection. It’s a belief system that has traditionally supported many African communities.

ヴィダでも、危ない雰囲気は全く感じませんでした。

There was absolutely no dangerous or creepy vibe in Ouidah. It felt peaceful and spiritual.

He removed a snake’s gut with his bare hand.

めちゃくちゃ内臓の臭いがひどい！！　ハエが飛びまくっている。

The smell of the guts was awful! Flies were buzzing every where.

内臓をくり抜き、哺乳類から鳥類、蛇など、様々な種類の動物が天日干しにされている、、！！

天日干しって、相場は海産物とか野菜だよね！？　初めて動物を天日干し、って言葉を使いました。

精霊や神々への捧げ物として、儀式の生贄的な立ち位置らしいです。

There are various types of animals – mammals, birds, snakes – all dried in the sun…!!

Sun-drying is usually something you associate with seafood or vegetables, right? This is the first time I’ve seen the term “sun-drying” used for animals.

Apparently, it’s done as offerings to spirits and gods, playing a sacrificial role in rituals.

いや絶対テーブルに綺麗に並べないでええ。大きい動物から小さい動物まで。　これは確かに黒魔術感すごいやん。

Definitely didn’t expect them to neatly line them up on a table! From big animals to small ones, it really has that black magic vibe.

これねえ、売ってるんですよ。「どれにする？」とか言われて。

みんな持って帰って捧げてんだろうなあ。。。

はあ、臭いがきつい。

周りで子供達が愉快に走り回ってました。

And, yeah… they’re actually selling them! They asked me, “Which one do you want?”

I’m guessing people take them home as offerings… Ugh, the smell was so strong.

Meanwhile, the kids were running around, laughing and playing nearby.

聖なる森へ Sacred forest

そんなに広くはないですが、壮観ですね。確かに神聖な場所、という感じ。ベナンでこんなに大きな木は見たことない！

Not so very big but the view was amazing. I’ve never seen such a big tree in Benin, which really feels like a holy place.

タクシーのにいちゃん、子供のころ来たことあるらしく、しっかり目にガイドやってくれる。

My driver was actually good guide. He came here before when he was a child.

ブードゥー教の精霊を象徴する彫刻がたくさんあります。座ってるのが良い。

There were many statues representing Voodoo spirit. I love the one sitting.

ちなみに6月で30℃くらいあるからね。。いやはや、汗が止まりません。

ベナンにきてクーラーというものをまだ感じていない。

It was 30℃ this day in June. Never stop sweating. I haven’t .found air conditioner since arriving Benin.

ウィダ飯 Ouidah food

こちら、一日ヴィダ観光を引き受けてくれたドライバーです。

This is the taxi guy who brought us and guided Ouidah all day.

この店に、お客さん（＝我々）連れてきたからタダにしてよー、的な交渉をして、タダ飯&タダ酒喰らってました。

He negotiated to this restaurant and got free lunch and beer because he brought visitors.

めっちゃビールで乾杯してるけど、あんたこの後もかなり運転すんだけどもね？

ベナン暑いからか、基本的にこの大きなサイズの瓶ビール（650ml）を提供されることが多かったです。

Yo, you should bring us back by car, you know?? He drunk this large size beer!

In Benin, a basic beer size was this 650ml, maybe because of this hot weather?

クソ暑いのに、このドライバーこの日水一滴も飲まずに、取り入れた水分はこのビールだけでした

こっちは汗だくなのに全然汗かいてないし。体の構造違いすぎるね。

It was super hot, but our driver didn’t drink any water — just this beer!

I was soaked with sweat, and he wasn’t even sweating at all. Are we even the same species?

ヴィダでのランチ。んー。 This was a lunch in Ouidah, well…

奴隷出荷の地 Slave exported beach

ギニア湾からはいくつかの港からその当時奴隷が「出荷」されていましたが、ベナンはヴィダ港にも奴隷市場があり、たくさんの人が船に乗せられていたようです。

In the past, slaves were shipped from several ports along the Gulf of Guinea. In Benin, the port of Ouidah had a slave market, and many people were put on ships there.

これがモニュメントとなっている奴隷の門。海岸の砂浜に設置してあります。

This is a gate placed on the beach.

「帰らずの門」 ”Point of No Return”
