ベナンにある「アフリカのヴェネツィア」とも呼ばれる湖上の街に訪れた話、ちっちゃな子どもたちが一人前の漁師として働いてました。

Visited village so-called “Venice in Africa” in Benin.  Little children were working as fishermen.

水上の村ガンビエ. Ganvié, a village on the lake

ガンビエは、ベナンのアタクラン湖に位置する水上の村。

「アフリカのヴェネツィア」とも呼ばれるこの村は、住民が水上で生活し、家や市場、学校までも水上にあります。

Ganvié is a village on the Lake Nokoué.  In this village, people are living on the lake which has houses, markets, and even schools.

なんでわざわざ水上なの？！　　Why did they make the village on the lake?!

ガンビエが水上に建設された理由には、奴隷貿易からの逃避が関係していると言われています。17世紀から18世紀にかけて、ガンビエの地域は、奴隷貿易の影響を避けるために水上での生活が始まったとも考えられています。

アクセスが悪いとことに逃げ込んだ、、その先が水上だったよう。とんでもないねえ。

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, people began living on the lake to avoid the slave trade.

The lake is a place that was hard to access, so they chose here. That’s unbelievable.

観光ボート Tourism boat

湖上の町ガンビエまで、ボートで観光できます。2、3時間くらいかけて観光するボートツアーがあります。  There was a tour about 2, 3 hours.

手漕ぎかモーターボートか選べます。もちろん手漕ぎだろお！

色々説明してくれるらしいガイド、値段提示してきました、10000CFA（2500円）

He was a guide who explained various things, has gave a price quote of 10,000 CFA (about 2,500 yen).

拒否しましたが勝手に乗ってきて、ガイドしてくれました。

2000CFAでした。結局ガイドの言い値の５分の1になりました。

At first, I declined, but the guide got on the boat anyway and ended up giving me a tour.

In the end, it was just one-fifth of the guide’s initial price, 2,000 CFA.

「ポスターの値段」と「カウンターで言われた値段」と「請求された値段」と「払った値段」全部違う、まあいいか

ここ、使ってあげてください。

“The price on the poster,” “the price quoted at the counter,” “the price I was charged,” and “the price I paid” were all different. Oh well, it’s fine.

ここがボート乗り場、桟橋です。 This is the boat dock, the pier.

観光地なんだけども、見せ物的なものはなく、本来のガンビエの住人の生活が淡々と動いている様子を見ることができます。

It’s a famous tourist place, but there aren’t any tourist attractions. Instead, you can see the everyday lives of the original inhabitants of Ganvié unfolding naturally.

ボート乗り場から、湖を通って目的地ガンビエに行くらしい！

We headed to Ganvié through this lake by boat.

え、手漕ぎボートで湖横断？！

若干不安ですが、この湖、水深はそんなに深くなく、浅瀬の方では、立てるくらいでした。

Wow, is that possible to cross this huge lake by rowboat??

This is not very deep.  In some areas, it was even shallow enough to stand.

こんな感じでボートで出航する！  ボートも、漕ぐっていうよりかは、長い棒で湖底を押して進む感じ。

Got on the boat!  Instead of rowing, the boat moves forward by pushing off the lakebed with a long pole.

湖上の人生  Life on the lake

地図上は湖に見えますが、漁の網や設置されていたり、水上の建物があったり、湖というよりは本当に小さな街でした。

It looks like a so-called lake though, there were houses, fishing nets, and markets.  It was more like a small town on the lake.

家や商店などがすべて水上に建てられており、住民はボートを使って移動する。

教会も病院も学校も水の上。これは学校らしい。

People here move to shops from the house by rowboat!   A church, hospital and even school were all on the lake.   This is a school.

本当に一生を湖上で過ごすんですね〜。信じられない！

ちなみにここの住人が亡くなったら湖の近くに土葬らしい。まさに湖の民だね。

That’s unbelievable to live their whole life on the lake.

At the last of life, people here were buried near the lake.  They truly are people of the lake.

村の人々は伝統的に漁業や観光業で生計を立てている。

They were living for mainly fishing or tourism.

可愛い少年！漁を手伝ってるみたい  This cute boy was helping with fishing.

この写真の奥の方に市場があり、そこに獲った魚を卸していました。

ボートで漁に出て、そのまま卸してボートで家に帰る、っていう生活スタイル！

The fish market was in the background of this photo.

The lifestyle here involves going fishing by boat, unloading the catch at the market, and then head home by boat!

このボート、最低でも一家に一台はあるらしい。まあ、ボートないと何もできないもんね

Each house has at least one boat because this is the only way to move.

生活インフラも整っていて、水汲み場がちゃんとあるのよー

The living infrastructure is organized. There’s a proper water source!

おっきなタンクをたくさん載せたボートが水を求めて集まってくる。

Many boats carrying big tanks were gathering for water.

ちゃんとボロい水上建築  Shabby houses on the lake

ある家に入ってみると、、床はスカスカ、下は湖。

携帯落としたら終わりだなこれ。

When I went into one of the houses… the floor was very flimsy.   If you drop your phone, it’s game over!

本当によく建ててますよこんな水の上に。よく保ってるなあと感心。

They’ve built well on top of the water.  I was honestly impressed by how well it’s all been maintained.

だけど、たまにはこんな傾いた崩壊寸前の家も。

But sometimes, you come across houses like this—almost collapsing.

これはもう完全に壊れている！！   This one is completely destroyed!!

このように壊れ始めたら、ちゃんと解体して資材を回収して、新しい家を建てるらしい。。

なるほどねえーエコだねえー。

When a house breaks down like this, they collect the wood materials and use them to build a new house.   Wow… it’s eco-friendly!

働く子どもたち  Kids working

漁をするかっこいい子供たち。  Cool fisher-children!

小学生くらいの年齢からガシガシ働いてました、この水上タウン。漁業にとっては貴重な戦力なんだね。

Elementary school-age children worked so hard here.   They are absolutely valuable members to cover living costs.

5歳くらいの、こんなちっちゃい子も1人でボートを操っている、心配！だけどかっこいい！

A 5-year-old boy was rowing the boat by himself,,,  it’s really worrying but also pretty cool!!

にしても、独り立ち早すぎるだろ。。

Still,, isn’t that way too early to be going independent??
