Google mapがあてになりませんが、どこまでもついてきて案内してくれます。

これまで訪れた国の中で1番優しいかも。

Beninese people are way too nice. And way too free.

Even Google Maps doesn’t help much, but they’ll literally walk us wherever we need to go.

Might be the kindest folks I’ve met so far

基本このサイズ感、660ml。日本のラガーより軽くてゴクゴク飲めるラガービール！

醸造所がなかったここコトヌーにコートジボワールが進出し、立ち上がったご当地ビール。

Basically served with this 66cl size. Lighter taste than Japanese lager.

A brewery in Ivory Coast built the original one in Cotonou.

ベナンについて、さあ、まずはネット環境の構築

Upon arriving Benin, we first set internet environment.

SIMカードを購入しよう。 Buy a SIM card

SIMカードが欲しいのだが、どこで購入できる？と聞いてみる。

I asked him where can I get SIM?

ベナンはフランス語圏のため、コミュニケーションの難易度が高いです。

英語は通じないため、ボディランゲージで会話していると、

なんと彼が宿から店まで歩いて案内してくれることに。

優しい！！

In Benin, the official language is French and that made me difficult to communicate.

He somehow understood my body language and brought us to the phone shop!

Such a kind guy!!

結構歩くなあ、あとどのくらいなんだろ笑と思いつつ、結局往復20分くらいの距離をスタスタ歩いて連れてきてくれました。

いやありがとうだけども、仕事抜け出して大丈夫！？

We then walked a long distance with an uncertain goal with anxiety..

It was around 20 min for round trip. I really appreciated it but is it OK for him?? How about your work??

なぜか外でSIMカードの販売登録がなされています。パスポート必須！

こんな立派な建物あるのに。。

I have no idea for this, why they are working outside the building and sold SIM card here even they had this great building.

Anyway, you need Passport to get SIM card.

アフリカクオリティです、SIMの登録に、30分以上は経過。

そしてジュニオールくんはずっとそばにいてくれる。。！？いや宿の仕事わい！？

30 min we need to register SIM card, this reminds me this is Africa.

Surprisingly, our hotel staff stayed with me the whole time!! Are you sure about your main job??

さて、SIMカードをゲットしたのはいいものの、どうやらSIMカードの残高を別途買う必要があるらしい。

宿給仕のジュニオールくんはそこまで連れて行ってくれました。

So, finally we got SIM card, then found we still needed to charge the card which they can not handle.

yes, of course my hotel staff brought us to that place.

まさかここ？？　ていうか露店！？

Here. OMG, isn’t it just shabby stall?!

ベナンでは露店がコンビニ的立ち位置で、食べ物からSIMカードのチャージまで取り扱っている路上のなんでも屋なのです。

SIMカードは通信会社で購入し、SI Mの残高チャージは道ばたの露店で行いましょう。

In Benin, those kind of stalls are handling many things from SIM charging to food sales.

おばちゃんの手により、SIMカード満タン！

This woman somehow charged my SIM balance!!!

いやあ、宿の仕事もあろうに、本当に助かりました。ただ1時間くらい勝手に宿を空けているジュニオールくんの大きすぎる裁量に感動。

やっさしいなあ。。

It was truly a great help for us. I was impressed by the hotel guy’s remarkable freedom to leave the hotel for about an hour without notifying the owner.

まだまだ優しいベナン人 Endlessly kind Beninese

汗だくで入った換金所では、わざわざ付けてなかったクーラーつけて休ませてくれたり、

道に迷っていると、目的地まで数分も歩いて案内してくれたり、

Other Beninese were also truly kind.

I was all sweaty when I went into the exchange place, and they even turned on the AC just so I could take a break.

When I got lost, they walked with me for a few minutes to show me the way.

体感として、人の優しさはこれまで訪れた30カ国以上の中で最高クラスでした。

From what I felt, the kindness of the people was one of the best out of all the 30+ countries I’ve been to.

観光時にはぜひ気をつけて欲しいのが、地図が全くあてにならないことです。

One thing you really need to be careful about when sightseeing in Benin is that the maps are totally unreliable.

Google mapが全然違うところを指しているので、驚愕しました。

衛星画像などから、ほぼほぼ街の通りや形状などは正しいが、現実と地図上の情報が全く一致していない！！テクノロジーの敗北。

I was shocked because Google Maps was pointing to completely wrong places.

The streets and shapes of the city look right which may be based on satellite images, but the info on the map doesn’t match the real world at all. Total tech fail.

ショッピングセンターって書いてあったのだが、、廃墟でした

写真と全然違う。

There was a place marked as a shopping center… but it was actually abandoned.

It looked nothing like the pictures.

買い物したいだけやねん！！どこなの〜？

I just want to do some shopping!!! Where is it even!!

ボロボロの街なみ Run-down streetscape

あと、全建物の5割はボロボロで、2割が建設中でした

Total ghost town vibes. Also, like 50% of the buildings were falling apart, and another 20% were still under construction.

この不安すぎる足場すごいね。

基本は土です。アスファルトなし。 It’s mostly dirt, no asphalt in sight.

あと、よく停電＆断水します。　水がなみなみ入った大きなバケツが常に用意してある！　準備良いね。

Power and water outages happen a lot. But there’s always a big bucket full of water ready—gotta love the prep!

こんなベナンですが、現地民が言うには、2026年に政府が観光業を盛り上げるためインフラや観光システムを整えるらしい。。何か新しいことが起こる、、らしい。

Apparently, the government’s planning to boost tourism in 2026 with better infrastructure and systems. Something new might be coming… or so they say.

Beninese holidays

観光地ではないので、とにかく観光情報が無いベナン。現地人にどこか見るべきものあるー？と聞くと、像や壁のアートをお薦めしてくれました。

いや、いいけどね。うん。

日本の娯楽の豊かさを再認します。

これはベナンの女戦士像。なんと近隣諸国との戦争時、女性のみで構成された軍隊が活躍したそう。それを称えた像です。めちゃくちゃでかい。

流石にここには黒人の観光客的な人が数組いました。、、、この国、観光客いたんだ。

This is the statue of the female warrior. During wars with neighboring countries, an army made up only of women was active. This statue honors them. It’s really huge.

There were a few Black tourists here. …I didn’t know this country had tourists.

休みの日何してんの？って聞いたら、、

「んー、ビーチかな」

ビーチで？

「散歩かな、大体休みの日は」

What do you usually do on your days off?

“Hmm… probably the beach.”

At the beach?

“Just walking around. I usually do that on my days off.”

おおおー、、、

え、毎週？？
