CAさんによる世界一早口なポーランド語アナウンスを浴び、LCCで有料の缶ビールを4杯ずつ飲み干すファンキーなカップルを横目に、入国です。

As the world’s fastest Polish announcement by a flight attendant echoed through the cabin, I entered Poland, watching a funky couple down four cans of beer on the low-cost flight.

ポーランド人は、若干パンクな感じ、黒いアイライナーとか、モノトーンのバンドっぽい格好しているイメージ（中身はめっちゃ優しいよ！！）
一年近くヨーロッパ圏に住み、徐々にヨーロッパ人の国籍を見分けられるようになってきた。

Polish people look a little punk — black eyeliner, monochrome clothes, like rock band members. But when you talk to them, they are very kind!!
After living in Europe for almost a year, I feel like I can now guess people’s nationality by their vibe.

ポーランドは　港町、グダニスク編です。This time, I visited Gdańsk, a port city in northern Poland.

トイレがオシャレすぎる。びっくりしました。

The restroom was shockingly stylish.

個室ごとに色が違うし、一面塗られている。。落ち着かん！笑

Each booth had a different color, and even the ceiling was painted all over. Hard to relax!

ピクトグラムも個性。 Even the pictograms had their own style.

Right next to the modern mall stood the old town with a medieval atmosphere.

ヘリテージデザイン Heritage Design

グダニスク旧市街、きゃわいい。ファサード（建物の正面）がおもちゃの街のよう。

The streets of Gdańsk looked like a fairytale.

グダニスクの旧市街は、第二次世界大戦のときになんとほぼ完全に破壊されました。というのも、当時はドイツ領だったから

街全体が瓦礫の山の状態から、ドイツに支配される前の中世時代を再現した再建旧市街。

During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed, but the people rebuilt it in the image of medieval Poland.

うん。にしてもデカすぎる教会がありました。

この教会なんと登れます。 You can even climb the huge church.

建物の中を駆け上がる体験、400段。。。。毎日鐘を鳴らしに登る、ていうかこんなに大きな教会を造り上げる昔の人ほんとすごい。
After running up 400 steps,,, oh I can’t believe people climb here everyday and even build this.

この天井のボコボコしているところが、、 The inside of this ceiling,,,

こうなっているんだ！というのがわかる。　巨大な鐘を間近で見ながら屋根裏へ。貴重すぎる。

高い天井を持つヨーロッパの教会の中でも、この屋根裏構造を見ることができるのは、かなりめずらしい！

訪れた教会史上No.1で興奮しました

could be seen. I reached the attic, right beside the giant bells. It’s rare to see the inside of such a high ceiling even among Europe where is famous for high ceiling church. It was an amazing experience.

そして、階段を登りきったその先、教会の展望台からの景色 From the top of this church,

美しい。綺麗な赤煉瓦色で揃った街並み。

the view of the red-brick city was breathtaking.

そう、この景色も再建されたものなのです。

This scenery is exactly reconstructed.

そもそもポーランドという国は、何度も無くなったり生まれたり、侵略されまくった国なのです。

Poland is a country that has disappeared and been reborn many times in history.

まず、西暦966年に王国として誕生。　中世には、リトアニアと大きな王国を作るが、18世紀には、ロシア・プロイセン・オーストリアの3国に分割され、国そのものが消える！　第一次世界大戦後に独立しますが、わずか20年後、ドイツに占領。第二次世界大戦後は国家としてポーランドとなるがソ連に支配される。

1989年についに民主化し、ポーランドは自由を手にしました。壮絶ですし、島国日本からはなかなか想像し難い隣国との攻防の歴史です。

The first Polish kingdom was founded in 966. In the Middle Ages, it formed a large union with Lithuania, but in the 18th century it was divided by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, and Poland as a nation disappeared. After World War I, it regained independence, but only twenty years later, it was occupied by Germany. After World War II, Poland became a country again, yet it was controlled by the Soviet Union.

Finally, in 1989, Poland became democratic and won its freedom.

まあ今では、抑圧された民主主義の反動か知らんけども

Today, maybe as a reaction to the long years of restriction,

こーんな金持ちヨット、クルーザーがたくさん停泊している。羨ましい

ほんとヨーロッパって金持ちヨット乗りが多い気がする

many luxury yachts and cruisers are anchored in the harbor. It really feels like there are so many rich yacht owners in Europe!

あえての旧市街 Old town rebuilt on purpose

戦後、瓦礫の山のグダニスクを再生するときに、中世の“ポーランド黄金期”をモデルに選んだらしい。「最もポーランドが輝いていた時代」を再現

ここでは、支配されたいたドイツ的要素、ゴシックとかバロック的な様式は意図的に排除！

グダニスク民のプライドを感じますね。まあもちろん現代は特に若い世代では軋轢はないようですが。。

After the war, when Gdańsk was rebuilt from ruins, people chose to model the city after the “Golden Age of Poland.” They wanted to recreate the time when Poland was at its brightest.

German styles like Gothic and Baroque were intentionally avoided, and the new old town became a symbol of Polish pride.

Today, especially among the younger generation, there is a calm atmosphere beyond the past conflicts.

ポーランド料理はかなりドイツテイスト（左）なものが多かったし、食は影響かなり受けてるみたい。

Some Polish food has a strong German taste.

ポーランドのアイデンティティ、ピエロギ（右）。　近隣の北欧に比べると、とても安くて美味い！（日本よりはちょい高め）

One of the symbols of Polish identity is pierogi — dumplings. Much cheaper and more delicious than in the nearby Nordic countries, though still a little more expensive than in Japan.

隣国を感じる Influence of neighbors

朝、めざましテレビ的なの見てたら、小学校から中継が。

One morning, I turned on the TV and saw a live broadcast from an elementary school.

えっ何？！？！？事件の人質？！
What!? Hostage!?

朝！　小学生の無垢な瞳の前に、、おじさんと銃が！！！

中継？？どういう状況？笑

To my surprise, a man with a gun was standing in front of the children! What the hell is this situation?!

ポーランドでは徐々に銃を持つ市民が増えており、なーーーんと、2024年から小中学校で、模擬銃を使った射撃訓練をしたり、「武器を分解・組み立てる」授業が義務になっているらしい！特にロシアウクライナと接している東部で。完全に影響が教育に出ております。。。

I learned that gun ownership is increasing in Poland. From 2024, shooting practice with mock guns and lessons on assembling weapons became mandatory in primary and junior high schools. In the eastern part of the country, near the border with Russia and Ukraine, the war’s influence is even seen in education.
