ユーラシア大陸の北の端っこ、北極圏（北緯66度以北）
The northern edge of the Eurasian continent, within the Arctic Circle.

北極圏と聞くと、冬は一面を氷と雪に覆われた世界、建物は木製の小屋がせいぜい、そんな世界を想像していましたが、
実際に降り立ったトロムソはまったく違いました。

The Arctic — just hearing the word makes you think of ice, snow, and silence.
But when I actually landed in Tromsø, it was nothing like that. It was far more urban than I imagined.

ふつーにめっちゃ“都会”です　　Definitely this is a CITY.

近代的なビルとか普通にあるし、オシャレBARも、スタバまであるし、、
There are many modern buildings and cozy bars,,, Starbucks.

こちらは標高400mくらい山の頂上にある展望台からの景色。いや、普通に大都市すぎる。

ケーブルカー（https://www.visittromso.no/cable-car）で頂上まで登れます。

Here’s the view from the observation deck at the top of a mountain about 400 meters high. Honestly, it looks way too urban for a place this far north!

You can reach the summit by cable car.

なんでこんなところが発展してんのや！　　How come this place got so developed!?

実はトロムソは北極圏の中でも意外とあたたかくて、夏には20度を超える日が20日ほど続き、冬も−5度前後。
北大西洋海流（ノルウェー海流）という北極圏に届く唯一の暖かい海流のおかげで、冬でも海が凍らない海域なんですね

In summer, there are around 20 days when the temperature goes above 20°C, and even in winter it stays around −5°C.
Thanks to the North Atlantic Current, which is the only warm ocean current reaching the Arctic, the sea here doesn’t freeze even in winter.

確かに、北極圏とは思えないやたら生命感の溢れたビーチ。

It’s hard to believe this lively beach is within the Arctic Circle.

海が凍らないということで、ニシンやタラなどの漁業の拠点として栄えたり、北極での探検や石炭採掘（スヴァールバル島）の基地になったり、したそう！

The warm ocean current made this area develop as a base for fishing, Arctic exploration, and coal mining.

さらに街には学生が溢れている。ここには「世界最北の大学（The Arctic University of Norway）」があり“最北端の学生街”でもあります。なんと学生数は1万人以上、北極圏の環境、先住民族、さらには宇宙、オーロラ研究と、北極特化型の分野が学べるらしい、いやあ興味深いね！！

Students filled the streets. This is home to the Arctic University of Norway — the northernmost university in the world — a true student city at the top of the Earth with more than 10,000 students. They specialize in Arctic-related research such as the environment, indigenous peoples, and the aurora. Sounds fascinating!

基本全てが最北端の〇〇となるらしい。世界最北端のマック、最北端のバーガーキングは、この街トロムソにあります。

Everything here is like “the northernmost something.” Even the world’s northernmost McDonald’s and Burger King are in Tromsø.

こんな北の果ての地で、豊かさの人類最高到達点を目の当たりにしました。

幸福度ランキング上位を占める、ノルウェー編です。

ノルウェイの森 Norwegian Wood

ノルウェーでは、「自然の中では好きに過ごして良い」という“自由の法律 Allemannsretten”がある　motorhomenorway+4Visit Norway+4Tromsø Outdoor+4

これ、誰かの所有地だとしても耕作・利用されていない土地に対して、一般人が入って行動できる法律上の権利。

森の中でキャンプしても、山をハイキングしても、川で釣りしても、湖畔でBBQしても、、、OK！！　ベリー摘み・キノコ採りなどもOK！

日本のように「BBQ禁止！！」とか「立入禁止！！」といったサインが貼られてない。。。

In this country, there’s a law that says, “You can do anything in nature.”
You can camp in the forest, fish in the river, or spend days by the lake — all freely.
Even if the land belongs to someone, you’re welcome to stay there as long as you don’t harm the environment.
There are no “No Trespassing” or “Keep Out” signs like in Japan.

だからか、めっちゃアウトドアなんですよね、ノルウェー人。こういう山を普段使いでハイキングする。冬はスキー、夏も夏スキー！

そういえば、さっきの展望台も、ケーブルカー使わないで雨の中ぬかるんでる夜真っ暗な山を登山してるノルウェー人いたし、、これはアクティブすぎる。

That’s why Norwegians are so into the outdoors. They often hike in mountains like these and ski all year round.

I even saw some people hiking up that dark, muddy mountain in the rain at night instead of taking the cable car — they’re unbelievably active!

ノルウェーではアウトドア文化（friluftsliv）が非常に根付いていて、「自然の中で自由に時間を過ごす」ことが国民的価値観と結びついている！

だからこそ、心身も健康になるし、人生が豊かなのよなあ

In Norway, the outdoor lifestyle is deeply rooted in the culture. Spending time freely in nature is seen as a national value.
That’s why people here stay healthy in both body and mind — and why life feels so rich.

誰かの所有地でも、ってのも驚きで、人んちの庭になっている果物とか勝手に採って良いそうです笑

いやユタカアアアアアア。。。

What’s even more amazing is that you can even walk across private land, and it’s okay to pick fruit from someone’s garden trees!

I mean… this is true abundance.

このアウトドア文化、幼稚園児も例外ではない。
「子供たちは外に出さなければいけない」という教育義務があるのだ。
雨でも吹雪でも、気温−10℃でも子どもたちは外で遊ぶ（必要があるのである）。

Even kindergarten kids are not exceptions. There’s a law that says they must go outside no matter the temperature. Even at −10°C, they play outdoors.

なんなら妊婦の状態でハイキングに行くこともよくあるそうで（大丈夫！？）、アウトドアの超英才教育ですな。　自然と触れ合うことが“教育の根本”にあるよう

Even pregnant women go hiking here! Being in touch with nature is a core part of education here.

彼らの豊かな週末 Rich weekend

街の郊外には、かつてのトロムソの暮らしを再現した“古民家スタイルの別荘”がある。

In the suburbs, there are old-style cottages that recreate life in ancient Tromsø.

なんと、現代人が別荘として「古き良き時代」を再現して、当時の暮らしを週末だけ再現しに行く家族が多いらしい！

「昔は今みたいに便利じゃなかったんだぞ〜大変だったんだぞ〜」って。

水道も電気もない、必要なものは持っていって薪で火を起こすらしい

Many families still go there on weekends to experience that lifestyle again. People used to split firewood and live without electricity or running water. Learning the hardships of the past by living them —what a healthy and humble tradition that is.

子どもたちは自然の中で走り回り、大人たちは焚き火を囲みながら静かにワインを飲む。
電気もない、インターネットもない環境で古きを知る。なんて健全なのでしょう。こんな余裕があること、なんて素晴らしいのでしょう。。

Children run freely through the forest, while adults sit around the fire, quietly drinking wine.
No electricity, no Wi-Fi —yet somehow, everything feels full.

豊かだと何が起こるか When their hearts are rich,

なんと車を駐車したりする時、鍵をかけずに放置する人が多いらしい！「いやあー久々に鍵かけたよー」って。ありえん！！

People often leave their cars unlocked without worry. In a society built on trust, there’s no need for cameras or guards.

さっすがに治安が良すぎるだろ。 The safety here is incredible.

バスも事前チケット購入による「信用乗車方式」。要するに乗車時のチェックがありません。
改札もなく、チケットを買わずに乗る人も多そうなのに、それでも社会がちゃんと回っている。
この“信用文化”ですよ。

Buses use a “trust-based system,” with no gates or ticket checks —and still, everything runs smoothly. This kind of culture of trust feels almost unbelievable for me.

止まったホテルのスタッフ、朝早く出ないといけなくて朝ごはん食べられないことを知ると、「開店前にお弁当にして準備しておくよ！」って、優しすぎるだろおい！　しかもちゃんとキッチンともオペレーション取れているのも素晴らしい。

When I told the hotel staff that I had to leave early in the morning and couldn’t have breakfast, she said, “No worries, I’ll prepare a breakfast box for you before the restaurant opens!” Seriously… how kind can you be!? Everything was perfectly coordinated with the kitchen team.

ルールに縛られず、でも責任を持って行動する。
それがノルウェーの「健全な自由」。
ルールが多すぎる日本の“マニュアル社会”とは、まるで正反対。

People here live with freedom, yet they act responsibly.
That’s what Norway calls “healthy freedom.”
It’s the complete opposite of Japan’s manual-based, rule-heavy society.

「豊かさ」って、“どれだけ自由に、どれだけ自然に生きられるか”なのかなと思いました。

True richness, it’s about how freely and naturally you can live.

ただ、豊かな国には代償がある。物価がえげつない。

But peaceful countries always have a price — and here, that price is literally high.
