西アフリカ旅3カ国目（ナイジェリア→ベナン→訳ありフランス→訳ありエジプト→ガーナ）

旅を続けていくと各国の違いをよく感じます。

Third country in West Africa (Nigeria -> Benin -> Unplanned stop in France -> Unplanned stop in Egypt -> Ghana)

As I traveled further, I really started noticing the differences between each country.

空港から街までの移動だけでさえ、たくさんの衝撃に出会いました。

Getting from the airport to the city was full of surprises.

はじめて西アフリカの空港でWi-Fiがつながりました！！

少しずつですが白人観光客もいるよう。

I finally got WIFI in a West African airport for the first time!!   There were even some white tourists here.

空港をでてすぐ、SIMカードを買います  Right outside the airport, bought a SIM card.

西アフリカはさすがに世界パケ放題も対応してないのでしっかり買っていきましょう

Since global roaming doesn’t cover West Africa, this is a must-have.

次はタクシーを拾います。

乗り場の場所がわからなくてあたふたしていると、携帯会社の店員が連れてってくれました

Next, finding a taxi.   I was a bit lost trying to find the taxi stand, and a phone shop employee stepped in to help.

周りのタクシードライバーからもたまに勧誘はされましたが、、場所を教えてくれたり、なんと我々が呼んでいたタクシーの到着を教えてくれたりしました

いやあほんとに人が優しいな。エジプトとは大違いよ！！

Even some drivers were trying to help me get a ride, kindly showed me the right location, and even let me know when our taxi arrived.

Wow, people here are so nice!!   Egypt was a whole different story..

さて、街に出ると、

ベナンにはなかった、広告の看板があることに驚きました。

Unlike Benin, there were billboards!

大統領選挙の候補者の看板、でかい！

Huge posters of presidential candidates were everywhere!

ちらりと見える、とても立派なモスクもある。。

他の西アフリカ諸国と同じように、ガーナでも宗教はイスラム教とキリスト教の二つにおおよそ分かれます。イスラム教は2割、キリスト教は7割。

There was a grand mosque.  Religion in Ghana, like other West African countries, is roughly split – about 20% Muslim and 70% Christian.

大きなビルもあるし、主要道路にはなんと車線がありました！この西アフリカ旅で初めて見たかも

There were big buildings and lanes on major roads!  First time seeing that on this trip.

またこのようなバイクはほとんどおらず少ないです。ガーナにきて、一気に車の量が増えました

Cars dominated the streets here, bikes were very rare.

ちゃんと交差点と信号があるし、

現地民が信号のないとこで道路渡ってたらドライバーに怒られてました

Intersections and traffic lights existed, and when locals tried jaywalking, drivers actually got mad at them!

さらには、

制服がある！  Uniforms were a thing here!

ベナンと比べると、明らかに洋服を着てる人が増えました

Tシャツにジーパンなど、アメカジスタイルを目にするように。

Compared to Benin, more people wore modern clothes, T-shirts, jeans, and American casual styles.

あと、職業服を着ている人がいました。

ガソリンスタンドに人がいるし（セルフじゃない）、スタッフは揃いの制服を着ている、、！

Even workers wore uniforms!  At gas stations, staff wore matching outfits.

さらには、小学生が制服を着ている！！！

これはすごい！

And even elementary school kids wore uniforms!!  This is incredible.

さて、ベナンと比べると圧倒的な豊かさを見せていますが、しっかりアフリカなところもあります。

Despite feeling more developed than Benin, Ghana still had its uniquely African quirks.

穴に棒  Holes in the road

道路に所々穴が空いてますが。。。対策は取られてます。  

Holes in the road?  Just stick a pole in them.

大きめの穴には棒を。わかりやすいね！

こういうのは、マンホール泥棒です。高く売れるようです。

Manhole covers got stolen and sold for good money.

なお、渋滞はひどいです。  Traffic was brutal.

夕方のラッシュの時間、ぜーんぜん進みません。

During rush hour, cars barely move.

路上コンビニ  Roadside convenience stores

女性や小さな子は、

食べ物飲み物、日用品などたくさんの商品を頭に乗っけて道路沿い、停車中の車間を歩いてます。

これはまさに現地人にとってのコンビニです

Women and young children hold food, drinks, and daily essentials on their heads, selling between stopped cars like convenience stores.

でも、変なものも売ってて、

車が止まっている時にネクタイやパンツを売る人がいました。誰が買うねん！

「あっ、パンツ買わなきゃだったっ」って誰が車停めて買うねん！！

But the weirdest thing, someone was selling neckties and underwear.

Who in traffic thinks, “Oh, yeah, I needed new underwear!”

一方、格差はあるようで、

制服を着ている小学生もいれば、小学校低学年の子が食べ物欲してくる、物乞いもたくさんいました。

止まっている車に向かって食べ物くださいジェスチャーを迷うことなくやってきます。

There was a clear wealth gap.  Some kids wore school uniforms, while others begged for food.

Children younger than elementary age made begging gestures at stopped cars.

エンストタクシー  Taxi struggles

空調の効かないタクシーが本当に暑い。

信号で止まると汗がどっと出てきます。

Taxis here have no air conditioning.

The second the car stopped at a light, sweat started pouring.

暑いだけならまだしも、なんか突然車が止まります。

What was worse, suddenly the car died.

エンジンの故障です！    Engine trouble!

タクシードライバーがおもむろに、トランクからペットボトルを取り出したとおもったら

エンジンオイルでした。ドボドボ追加して、再始動。その日暮らしぃ〜！！

いちいち不安なのよー

The driver casually took a plastic bottle from the trunk, engine oil.   He just dumped it in, and off we go.

Living paycheck to paycheck!

ガーナのタクシーも、基本日本の中古車なんですが、まさかのカーナビが日本語表記のまま。

Ghanian taxis were mostly used Japanese cars.  The GPS, still set to Japan.

ドライバーから「これどこ走ってるんだよ？」と聞かれ見てみると、

西アフリカに居るのにGPSがずっと山口県を走ってました笑

越境できないカーナビ。

The driver looked at me and asked, “Where the hell are we?”

We checked, his GPS showed us driving through Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
