Crossing the border by land to Benin from Nigeria.

Nigeria to Benin

ナイジェリアの最大都市ラゴスからベナンとの国境の街セメへ向かう。

Headed to Seme, where is the town located at the border of Benin and Nigeria, from Lagos.

まずはセメ行きのバスやらが出ているバスセンター的なところまで市街地からタクシーで向かいます。

First, we headed to the bus terminal, where the bus to Seme leaves, by taxi.  

Mile 2 motor park という場所からセメ行きのバスが出ているとのこと。

到着した瞬間におっちゃんたちがタクシーに寄ってたかってきます！

彼らはセミ行きのタクシーのドライバーでした。　お前ら絶対セメだろ！俺のタクシーに乗れ、ということで笑

Upon arriving, our taxi was surrounded by local men who were taxi drivers!

They were sure that we were traveling to Seme and trying to get us as customers.

この車が集まっているのがどうやらバスセンターらしい。

This area where many cars are gathering is supposed to be the bus terminal.

乗合のバンやらタクシーが集まっている。特に標識はないので、各々ドライバーが行き先を叫んでいる！

アナログ！！！

There was no sign of destination, so drivers were shouting about their destination!!  How analog it is!!

長距離交通網の拠点みたいな感じなので、人も物品もよーく動いてます。

業者みたいに荷物を運搬する人や、バスを乗り継ぐ一般人たちの光景が見られます。

Here should be the hub of transportation and have many people who carrying luggage or transferring and products which are going to be sold.

セメ行きの乗合タクシーを見つけたのはよいが、、

It was good to find the taxi to Seme though,,

そこからひたすら待つ。。

I had to just wait soooo long.

というのも、最小催行人数（＝車に打ち込める最大人数なのだが、、）揃わないと、発車しないのです。

当然時刻表などはなく、セメ行きの人間5人揃うまで、待つ。

This is because the taxi doesn’t leave until they have a maximum number of people able to get in the car.

Of course, there was no determined bus schedule, which means there is no time limit.   I was very sure that nothing could move forward unless enough people gathered.

セメ！セメ！セメ！！と乗客を探すタクシーオーガナイザー。

“SEME! SEME! SEME!” An organizer-like man was shouting and searching for passengers.

ぜーんぜん集まんない。

え？これ集まんなかったら行かないの？！笑

Nobody came.    Wait.  What would happen if we did not have enough passengers?! lol 

後どれくらいで出発できるんやねん！国境越えるのも時間かかるし、時間的にベナンの宿に到着できるか、、など不安を抱えながら、しょうがないのでひたすら待ちます。

How long do we have to wait more????  It seems that passing the border takes time so I wonder whether I could arrive at the hotel in Benin or NOT.

But, all I could do was JUST WAIT for PEOPLE.

ちなみにセメまでの料金は1人7000ナイラ、これは固定なので安心して下さい。

これ700円くらいなんだよねー        もう5人分払うから出発せい！笑

By the way, it cost only 7000 Naira, 7 $, and this is a fixed price.   So please don’t worry.

“Just leave! I can pay for others’ fees!!!!”

このモーターパークでは、食べ物飲み物などが流しで売っています。

暇なので買う。

In this motor park, some food and drinks were sold in the street.

Bought one just to kill time.

まさかの二重包装、  Unexpected double packaging.

いや三重包装のお菓子でした。。エコとは。    Wrong, that was actually tripled packaging.  ECO..

なんか子供達が作ってた。。テーブルや椅子は手作りらしい。  Children here were creating some desks and chairs handmade.

さあ、結局あいのりを1時間以上待ち、奇跡的にセメに向かう同志たちが集結！

After waiting more than one hour, we have comrades who traveled to Seme!

5人揃ってgo!     Leave the bus terminal with 5 guys!

あー暑すぎるから早く車乗りたい、、と思ってたけど、そうだね当然エアコンなんてないね。

真夏にエアコンなし、男5人。気持ち良すぎます。

Once I wanted to get in a taxi to get an air conditioner, but I was wrong.   There should not be one.

さあ、セメまではひたすら西へのロングドライブです。

So, just do a long drive to West for Seme.

永遠に続くゴミ集落   An eternal garbage village

これほんと1kmどころじゃなく、しかもそれがところどころと続いてました。

どうすんの、これ？

This was not just here, it lasted more than 1 km.   Who treats this??

Bribe checkpoint

1時間超ほど走って行くと、道路脇に警官がいて「はい止まってー」、、車の検問らしい。

After driving for about one hour, we saw the cops standing beside the road.  “Stop here.”  That’s inspection.

なんだ？！ちょっとビビります。

「何しに行くんだよ」「ビザあんのか？」「パスポート見せろ」「入国記録は？」

What??  Why here??  A little scary.

“Purpose??”   “Visa?”   “Passport??”  “Stamp??”

やはり、陸続きの国境ってピリつくなあ。

This is strict, maybe because of the land border.

ただ、国境に近づくにつれ数kmごとにこの検問に出会います。え、また？！なんかどんどん増えてるぞ、、！こんなに検問されるなんてっ初めて！！！！

I still found inspections more for each a few km.  Again??   It more and more came out as I got closer to the border!

こんな感じです。  Inspection was like this.

道路脇に置かれたタイヤの位置に、バケツを先っちょにくくりつけた長い（太ければなお良し）木の棒をスッと差し出して、道を物理的に塞ぎます。

They let cars stop physically by putting long tree poles with buckets at the tip.

その後、窓開けるように言われ、パスポートなど諸々確認するのですが、気づきました。

Then, they started checking passports and so on.    And I found this,

これあれだなあ、、賄賂ね！！ Oh yeah! This is A BRIBE.

最終的にお金を渡さないと通してくれません。

They didn’t let us go through without bribes.

警察の制服姿の検問もあれば、このようにめっちゃ私服な検問もある、、、こいつら絶対一般人だろ！？  絶対オフィシャルじゃないパスポートチェック。

Some were done with cop-like guys with uniforms, and others were just wearing casual clothing.   You must be not cops!! It must be an unofficial passport check!!

てゆうかオフィシャルな検問なんてそもそも存在するのか？！警察も賄賂目的だろ

Wait.  Is there an official inspection existing, in the first place?!   Cops also do this for money.

これねえ、何が酷いかって、、

流石に多すぎる！！

What was worst was ,,, the number of inspection!!!    TOOOO MANY!!!!

100mごとに検問が設置されてんのよ！

京都の鴨川カップルみたいに！近すぎずならないように！

There were inspections each 100 m!!     Keeping it not too close?   Don’t need that kind of consideration!!!!!!

止まって、賄賂払って、発進して、ちょっと加速したらまた止まる。。。うざい！！いつまでこれ続くの？！？！

国境まで20分ほどの地点にいたのに、ぜんっぜん着かない。

Drive,   Stop,   Pay money,   Drive ,   Stop..    F◯CK!!    How long do I have to treat this???

We were a place 20 min to the border though,,  never getting there.

これね、本当に永遠のように続きます。

もう検問止まって賄賂払ってる時に次の検問見えてんだよなああああ。

またあそこで止まるのかああああ。発狂。

This actually lasted forever.    I even could see the next checkpoint while paying the one.

I was going to be crazy,, “We have to stop there and pay again???”

たまに20m間隔で木の検問設置されてることもあり、流石にうざすぎてドライバーも「いや今払ったばっかり！」と言って静止を振り切って前の車にくっついて突破したりしました。ナイジェリア人ドライバーはこっち側なのが少し不思議ね

Sometimes the inspection was set 20 m distance from the previous one.   That was so annoyingly impressive that the driver went through the point of following the car in front.

With shouting like “JUST PAID!!!”    The driver was our team even though Nigerian.

ちなみにこの賄賂はドライバーが払ってくれる。だからくしゃくしゃの札が大量にダッシュボードに置いてあったのか。。一回の単価は低いですが、回数が多いので出費だろうな。

賄賂代も出してもらって、交渉もしてもらって、7000ナイラ、これ安いよドライバーさん。ありがとな。

For the bribes, our driver paid all the time.   That’s why there were a bunch of crumpled bills on the dashboard. Even if the amount is low for one bribe, which was too many so should cost.

Our driver paid bribes, negotiated with cops, and brought us with 7000 Naira.  That was so cheap, way too cheap!!!!    We should appreciate that.

検問でも、たまに仲良くなって車走り出しているのに窓に手入れて握手してくるやつがいたり、両替的に賄賂額ちょっと返してもらうこともあり、、

賄賂もらう側も、ある程度のラインはわきまえてるようで、非常識な額を求めてくるような超悪徳な商売ではないようです。ただこれが逆に継続的な賄賂システムの存在に繋がっているのだろうね。。

In bribe checkpoints, some guys became friends and tried to shake hands even when the car was running, and even got back some bribes,,,

It didn’t seem like it was a completely unethical business.   That might be a reason for it has lasted so long, on the other hand.

ただやはり回数が多すぎる！

まじでこの走って止まる繰り返しと、いつ終わるかわからない怖さで、イライラも通り越し頭がおかしくなります。

Anyway, that was tooo much!

Seriously, this constant running and stopping, and the fear of not knowing when it will end, was so frustrating it’s making me go crazy. 

この木の棒検問、これまじで誰にでもできるお仕事で、長い棒とバケツがあればできるの。

発明したやつ、、お前はすごい。

今やかなりの人間が真似して一大ビジネスよ。

This tree inspection, only needs a long tree pole, is a job anyone can do.

The first man who invent this must be genious.   It has been great business so far.

参入障壁小さすぎる。

絶対地元のおっちゃんが「今日のお小遣い稼ぐかぁー」ってノリでやってんのよ！しかもたまに制服きた警官とバリバリ地元私服おっちゃんのコンビもあるのよ。

Literally, anyone can do this.

The local man just living beside the road join this for side hustle, sometimes with a real cop!!

「これ警察に通報だ」、、、ってダメだ。警察がやってんthe 。もうこのthe わり！

That sucks. If I try to call the police, the police are doing this.   

Seme (Boder town)

やっとのこさセメに着きました。結局車の確保や検問に時間かかりまくって早朝出たのに、もう昼過ぎよ。

After an unnecessarily long journey, we got to Seme!   It was around noon taking a ton of time to get a taxi and go through bribe checkpoints, I left very early though.

セメに着いたら、車が止まる前に群がってきます。  The moment I got there local guys gathered around our still running car.

右見ても左見ても車を掴んで離さない奴ら！！笑

これは俺の獲物だぞ、、的な！？

On both sides!!!   Guys hanged the car like showing “This is my prey.” 

これは国境までバイクに乗せてあげる、or案内してあげる、の人たちです

もちろん幾らかのお金のためです。なーんでもビジネスにするね本当に。

Those guys tried to earn money by guiding or taking us to the border by bike.

Wow, everything could be business here.

まあこいつらもうざい。悪いやつではないが、ずーっと着いてくるからねえ。まあ別によいけど！

Super annoying too these guys were.   They were sticking us.

この街もかなりフレンドリーです。   This town was so friendly place.

ピュアでよいよね。さっきまでの賄賂検問地獄が嘘のよう。心が晴れます。

They were soooo pure and wonderful. It felt like a hell of continuous bribe checkpoint ints were in a different world.

さあ、車を降りて国境まで500mくらい歩きます。  Walking 500m to the border.

こういう荷物を国を越えて運んでいる人がたくさんいます。

Here we had many people who were bringing some stuff across the border.

さあ、この網歩道を通って出国します    So, let’s cross the border through this iron mesh walkway. 

なんか独特ぅー

これは出入国審査に繋がっていて、頭に商材など載せた現地民が双方向に行き交っています。

That’s unique.    This walkway connected to immigration, many locals were walking across the border with stuff on their heads.

半袖短パンのスポーツシャツ着たじいちゃんが荷物チェック、パスポートチェック。

日本人だから、荷物チェックはなく、ほぼ顔パス。

後から来た黒人は身体中調べられて、さらには出国できなくてめっちゃスタッフと喧嘩してました

A guy with half shorts and half shirts was checking a passport and baggage.

I was not check anything maybe I guess I’m Japanese.

The black guy coming later was checked everything including his body, and eventually went fighting for not being able to exit.

出入国管理官、ラフだねえ格好が。アロハシャツにハンチングみたいなおじちゃんスタイルです。

パスポートチェックに時間かかります。何度も入国スタンプは？？と聞かれました。

どうやら空港のスタンプ薄すぎて、めっちゃわかりにくいらしい。確かに押してないくらい薄い。。空港よ、賄賂に勤しんでないで新しいインクくらい買ってくれよ頼むぜ、

In immigration, the staff was so informal, wearing Aroha shirts and a flat cap.

It took time to check passport here.   The staff asked where is the entry stamp???  The entering stamp at the airport was so faint and unclear.    Come on, don’t do bribe just focus on your job!

あ、当然すぎて書いてませんでしたがここでも「Give me something」ありました。

しつこい、パスポート預かられたまま全然通してくれません、

Well, I deliberately chose not to report about “Give me something”, since it was here as always.

He was very stubborn and wouldn’t give back my passport.

もうええて。払わなかったけどね。     I’m tired of this.    I was also stubborn not to pay for him.

さてと、特にゲートもないけど、何とか出国できたっぽい。。

さあ、ベナン🇧🇯に入国！

Then, it seemed I finally exited this country while there was nothing like gates.

Entered Benin!!

そういえば、セメの駐車場から出国までずっと着いてきているにいちゃんたちは何のチェックもなく国境通過してたなあ。ほんとの顔パスってやつです。

By the way, the guys who were sticking us from car parking just went through this border without any checks.   This is what we call a true VIP pass.

日本人にとって国境を越えるってかなり構えるものですけど、

改めて国境って、人工的に、政治的に引かれた「ただの線」何だなあと実感。

For most Japanese, crossing the border sounds like a tough task though,

I realized that the border is just a “LINE” drawn for convenience, for political reasons.
