無事携帯も帰ってきたところで

So, I successfully got back my phone,

西アフリカ初日に携帯を無くした話／ Lost my phone on Day 1 in West Africa

さて、お食事に行こう。 Let’s have some dinner.

「高級住宅街」をゆく   Walking through an upscale residential area.

ここは高級ホテル街（一応）です、夜7時くらいなのに若者たちは建築？解体？で働いている！

This is a exactly “luxury neighborhood”.     Young guys were working in construction even though it was later 7 PM.

いや。。  Wait

穴あきすぎじゃ、、ね？   What is those too many holes?!

ながら歩きはしないように、こういう穴があるので落ちちゃいますよ

Please don’t walk while chatting, as there are holes you might fall.

この道端で座っている人、なんなんだ？    Why are they sitting on the street??

周りの人と話したり、話さなかったり、座ったり立ったり、ひますぎるのでしょう。

Some were talking, others were just standing or sitting,,, they must have had too much free time.

ちなみに、レストランの帰りも真っ暗なのにまだいました。

暇すぎない？！　家が暑いのか、家にいても何も変化ないからか、

Surprisingly, they were still there after eating dinner with completely dark outside.

Can’t understand.   Is there nothing to do in the house?  Too hot to stay in the house? 

そういえばホテル出てから5歳くらいのちっちゃい子供に道中ずっと着いてこられてました。もう夕方ですよ?!  可愛いけどちょっとこわい笑

There was also a 5-year-old cute boy following us.  Why was this little boy strolling by himself at a late time?    Where is his parents??   Cute though, a little bit scary.

何とかまいてレストランへ到着。

Got away from the boy, and finally arrived at a restaurant.

入り口はー？    It was hard to find out the entrance.

駐車場の明かりでここは明るいのだが、階段から上が真っ暗。。。

これは、、、やって、、、るの？

There was a slightly bright but upstairs was completely dark…

真っ暗な階段を上がると、真っ暗なフロアにつき、ドアを開けると、

薄暗い明かりが。やってますね！うん

As I walked up to dark stairs, I reached a dark floor.   When I open the door, there was a dim light.    Yes, there it is!

電力使わなすぎなのよ。

Seriously, they were hardly using any power!!

さて、ビールが、、、ない！！

？！

やる気がないのよねえビジネスの。アルコールは赤ワインのみ。

Let’s get some BEER,,,, no?!   They don’t have it!  Only for red wine.

Who can open a restaurant without beers???

食事は、、   For dishes,

EgusiとPounded yamと言う伝統料理を頼みました。

I ordered traditional African cuisine, Egusi and Pounded yam.

このボールはフィンガーウォーターです。これが出てきた時に、あぁ手掴みかと知る

This bowl is for washing fingers.  When I saw this, I realized that is a finger food.

絶対に腹下すであろう水で手を洗い、ながら食べます。

Eating with hands while washing finger in water that would definitely upset my stomach.

そして、到着。こちらです。  Here comes the food!!

Egusi（エグシー）とPounded Yam（ポンデヤム）は、西アフリカ、特にナイジェリアやガーナなどで広く食べられている伝統料理。エグシーは、ウリ科の例えばメロンの種を乾燥させて粉末にしたものをベースにしたスープのこと。ポンデヤムは、ヤム芋を茹でてすりつぶしたペースト状のやつです。いわゆる西アフリカの主食的立ち位置でしょう。このペースト上のモチモチをスープにつけて食べます。

Egusi and Pounded yam are traditional West African cuisines.  Egusi is a soup made of dried watermelon seeds.   Pounded yam is pounded yam, so called a staple food here.  Eat this with the egusi soup.

アフリカ人がこれを手でちぎってうまそうに食べてるYoutubeをよく見ていたので、ついに本場のそれが食べられる！嬉しい！

スープには、ホルモンを追加トッピングしました。たくさんの野菜と、お肉が入って具沢山。

I’ve often watched YouTube of Africans eating this with their hands happily, and now I can finally try the real thing!   I’m so excited!

I added some offal as a topping to the soup and it’s packed with plenty of vegetables, making it really hearty.

一口目で飽きる

I got bored after the first bite.

うまみがない。塩味すら。五味の一つも感じない。。風邪ひいて味覚おかしくなったか？？と思いました！　　30カ国旅してきたけど、、久しぶりに残念な食べ物を食べました。

There’s no UMAMI.   I couldn’t taste any of the five basic flavors… not even salt.  Do I have a cold now?!

I’ve traveled over 30 countries, but… it’s been a while since I had such a disappointing meal.

いや。味なかったよ？　味覚の五角形、全部0！あんなに材料使って逆にすごい。辛味は100。

Well, there was no flavor though? The flavor profile was zero!  The spiciness was 100, though.

あと、、量多すぎる！！！   味ないくせに重すぎる。

私もよく食べる方ですが、半分以上残してしましました。　　スタッフ「おかわりあるからっ！✨」って誰がそんな食べるの？！

What was worse… way too much yam!!!   It’s so heavy despite having no flavor.

I can eat a lot, but I ended up leaving more than half.   The staff said, ‘We have refills!’ Who’s gonna eat that much?!

そして壊滅的に食べにくい。何故手なんだこれは？？

周り見ると「カチャカチャッ」 っおい！！現地民はフォークとスプーンつかって他の料理食ってんのかい！！誰も食ってないじゃんこれ！やっぱこれまずいんじゃん！！！

And that was a disaster to eat it with my finger!   

When I looked around, I heard the sound of ‘clink clink’!    Hey!! The locals were using FORKs and SPOONs to eat OTHER dishes!    No one was eating this! So this must be bad after all!!!

やっぱKFCとかうまみだらけの外資のファストフード入ってきてEgusiのまずさに気づいちゃってんじゃん！

I know the locals realized Egusi’s terribleness by experiencing overseas strong fast food like KFC.

ただ、店の奥の方にちゃんといました。

1人の若者がスマホ片手にこれ食べてました。日本でもよく見る光景。。

Lately I found the one.

the young guy was eating Egusi and yam whlile using iPhone.  Common scene in Japan.

え、このヤム芋パテ全部食えるの？！と見てましたが、

That was very curious whether he could eat up or not,

かなり量が多かったけど、もりもり食べて完食してました。さすが現地人。

まあ、ながら食べくらいがちょうど良いね、味ないし。

It was a huge portion, but he ate it all up.   As expected from the local.

It would be great for eating while doing something else, thanks to its tasteless.
